MODX is an open-source content management system (CMS). Open-source means that the source code is freely accessible to everyone, so you won't depend on one agency to create and maintain your digital platform. But MODX is not the only name this CMS is known. We use MODX since 2008. That time was only one MODX – MODX EVO (evolution). In 2010, the first version of MODX Revolution (another fork that officially known as MODX today), a complete rewrite of the CMS, was released. MODX LLC was founded in May 2010. May 2010 also saw the first official MODX conference, MODXpo Dallas. The event's main sponsor was Microsoft.
MODX EVO was supported all that time (mostly by Ukrainian developers) and was renamed to EVOLUTION CMS.
At official MODX website announced in 2016 that: "Today MODX is recognizing Evolution CMS as an independent project and officially giving the keys to the awesome team that’s managed it for years. MODX turned over Evo to its current leadership team to focus on MODX Revolution CMS. Since the current Evo team has been solely responsible for its development and releases for the last few years, it is only fair to give them the autonomy and recognition they deserve. Today we’re formally recognizing this transition and handing" over the keys to Evolution CMS.
But both MODX and EVO (evolution) have the same principles of development.
